In 1997 Williams Jackson Ewing was commissioned to develop a strategic master plan for the University of Pennsylvania. Their vision was to develop a pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use project that would offer innovative retail, a variety of restaurants, late night activity and guest accommodations for the Penn Campus and the surrounding residential population. The project includes 150,000 square feet of retail space, including a 50,000 square foot Barnes and Noble, at the base of a 261 room hotel.  The project is a place for late-night, vibrant activity that provide a destination location for the University and the broader community.

As the retail developer of the project, Williams Jackson Ewing oversaw design review, merchandising, marketing, leasing and tenant coordination for the urban project.

Today, Sansom Common is hailed as a model for major urban universities that wish to improve the quality of life on and adjacent to their campuses. Sansom Common provides amenities and opportunities to students, faculty and area residents that make the school among the most attractive and competitive in the country.  With its tree-lined streets and sidewalk cafes, the center is a vibrant meeting place for students, faculty and residents of the area.
